Advanced technologies and the Internet have forever changed many of the fundamental ways that we as a society do business.   The availability of instant information has in a practical sense, removed the element of time from the business process.  Information is what business leaders use to make major decisions.  Access to instant information means that their decisions are being made at record speed, with time no longer being a part of the equation.  The product of that decision; change.  With instant decisions also comes unprecedented rapid change.

Business competition has exponentially as a result of the Internet and online marketing.  Today, small vendors can reach markets in other countries, just like their larger counterparts.  Basically, understanding the needs and psychology of your market and how to reach them online has become more relevant to sales success than having a large marketing budget.  This has dramatically narrowed the competitive edge that many medium-sized firms have enjoyed over smaller firms.  Smaller firms are now very capably competing for the very same markets.

The Internet has also created a interconnected global community.  The economy of our nation is intertwined with the economies of those with whom we do business across the seas.  Just as the United States owns and operates businesses in foreign countries, those same foreign countries own and operate businesses right here in the U.S. The impact of this inter-connectedness means that as a nation, we must be concerned to some degree about economic conditions overseas.  It means doing business with nations with whom we may politically disagree and even object.  It is the nature of a global economy.

Changing Seasons

Great leaders know how to shift and exit the center stage with grace and skill.  They are not so consumed with being at center stage that they miss this inevitable shift. They know that seasons change.  Always.  It is their gratitude for the success they’ve had that empowers them to accept a new role.  The prideful and unthankful will attempt to hold on beyond the turning point, and force faithful admirers to watch them stumble as opposed to shifting while at the top of their game.

We saw this with the renown Michael Jordan.  He had had a fabulous basketball career with the Chicago Bulls, with all the accolades that accompanied his rise to fame.  But when the shift came, he let it go — at first.  He then mistakenly decided that he would come back as the star child of baseball.  It was not until he had miserably failed that he became willing to accept the fact that the season had shifted.

Nobody stays at center stage forever.  Nobody.  And when the season shifts, the change will occur, with or without permission.  The only question is whether or not the change be with grace and honor, the way it is meant to be.
